Often called Moving Meditation, Tai Ji Quan is an ancient system of movement from China, developed for health and self defense. Dating back to approximately 1200 AD and based on writings from the I Ching, this exercise is suitable for both young and old, and does not require extraordinary physical conditioning. It needs no special equipment and can be practiced anywhere in a minimum amount of space.
Consisting of 108 movements practiced in a slow relaxed manner, Tai Ji helps make the body strong and promotes total relaxation, which allows the free circulation of blood to all parts of the body. It helps make the internal organs strong and the mind clear.
Though not easily apparent from viewing, Tai Ji is also a martial art, but one different from most styles. It relies on internal power that functions like a wind to uproot a tree, or like a wave with the power to sink a ship. Proficiency in the martial aspects of Tai Ji, as in all styles of martial arts, requires time and practice.
Although the movements of Tai Ji can be acquired in a matter of months, mastery of this ancient system of martial art will require consistency, dedication and hard work.
David Wilson studied Wu Style Tai Ji Chuan and Eagle Claw Kung Fu with Grandmaster Leung Shum in New York City for ten years. Sifu Shum began his study at the Ching Wu Academy in Hong Kong at age 8. Taught by his godfather Ng Wai Nung, Sifu Shum can trace his lineage directly back to Chang San Feng, the founder of Tai Chi Chuan.
